FLUX 3 Klein vs Krea 3: an Open 5.6B Model at $0.009 and a 2K Editor Under 8 Seconds
RenderHour · October 27, 2026 · 10 min read
In short
- FLUX 3 Klein is Black Forest Labs’ open-weights image model with 5.6B parameters: up to 10 references, layout boxes, an API price from $0.009 an image, and it runs on a graphics card with 8 GB of memory.
- Krea 3 is Krea’s editing model: most edits in under 8 seconds at native 2K, up to 6 references, $0.03 an image at 1K and $0.06 at 2K.
- Both are on RenderHour since October 27, 2026: FLUX 3 Klein at 0.65 credits an image at 1K, Krea 3 at 3.75.

Two image models came out on October 15, 2026, and they pull in opposite directions. FLUX 3 Klein from Black Forest Labs is small, open and cheap: $0.009 an image through the API, or free to run on your own graphics card. Krea 3 is a closed editor built for speed at 2K. On RenderHour, FLUX 3 Klein costs 0.65 credits an image and Krea 3 3.75. We gave both the same jobs, and the same edit we gave Nano Banana 2.1.
What is FLUX 3 Klein?
FLUX 3 Klein (Black Forest Labs calls it FLUX 3 Image Klein) is the smallest model of the FLUX 3 family. One model makes images from text, edits them and combines up to 10 reference images. Bounding boxes set where things go in the frame, or keep an edit inside an area.
- Open weights, 5.6B parameters, on Hugging Face in 2 versions: a base model for fine-tuning (50 steps) and a distilled one for speed (16 steps).
- Runs at home: 11.2 GB of weights in BF16 and 5.6 GB in FP8; the INT8 build runs on a GeForce RTX card with as little as 8 GB of memory.
- Licence: the FLUX Kommunity License allows free commercial use for people and companies under $5 million in yearly revenue. Larger companies license it or use the API.
- Better than its parent, per BFL: +91 Elo in text-to-image and +70 in editing over FLUX.2 Klein 9B, with 38% fewer parameters.
| Hardware and setup | Time |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA GB300, distilled, NVFP4 | Under 0.6 s |
| GeForce RTX 5090, distilled, INT8 | About 4 s |
| BFL API, text to image (median) | 4.54 s |
| BFL API, editing (median) | 7.18 s |
| GeForce RTX 4070 in ComfyUI, distilled, INT8 | 8.9 s |
| DGX Spark, base model, 50 steps | 43.8 s |

What is Krea 3?
Krea 3 is the image model of Krea, the AI design app that says it has 30 million users. It is built around editing: give it photos and say what to change. Krea says it keeps a product as it is, down to the label and the logo, and keeps a person the same person in a new scene. It takes up to 6 reference images per edit on krea.ai, and works natively at 2K.

- GPT Image 290 s

By Krea’s figures, it edits about 4 times faster than Nano Banana Pro and 11 times faster than GPT Image 2. At Krea’s list prices, 100,000 edits a month cost $6,000 with Krea 3, $13,500 with Nano Banana Pro and $22,000 with GPT Image 2.

Why does Krea 3 take one reference here? fal bills it $0.025 a megapixel for the output and for every reference, so each extra photo raises the cost of the image. RenderHour prices a Krea 3 image for its output plus one reference, which keeps the price per image fixed. FLUX 3 Klein’s references are not billed, so all 10 are open.
One prompt on both: which looks better?

Prompt
A glass bottle of cold-pressed orange juice with no label on a sunlit white stone ledge, two orange halves and a few green leaves beside it, droplets of condensation on the glass, hard summer shadows, deep blue Mediterranean sky behind, commercial product photo.
What we see: FLUX 3 Klein followed the prompt closely: no label, condensation droplets all over the glass, orange halves, leaves and the sea on the horizon, in hard sunlight. The bottle is a plain jar with a rim and no cap. Krea 3 made a cleaner, more graphic shot: a capped bottle, wide empty sky, a long hard shadow. It skipped the condensation, and its sky has no sea. Neither shows text artifacts. Krea itself puts editing first; on this one prompt its picture is clean but follows the brief less closely.
One edit on 3 models: what stays the same?
Editing is where Krea 3 says it shines, so we gave it, FLUX 3 Klein and Nano Banana 2.1 the same photo and the same instruction: swap the croissant for a blueberry muffin and keep everything else. It is the first edit of our Nano Banana 2.1 drift test.

Prompt
Replace the croissant with a blueberry muffin on the same plate. Keep everything else in the photo exactly the same.
- Nano Banana 2.12.94
- FLUX 3 Klein8.62
- Krea 321.70
Source: RenderHour test, October 27, 2026; one run per model.
All 3 made a good muffin swap. The difference is the rest of the photo. Nano Banana 2.1 left it almost untouched. FLUX 3 Klein kept the layout but redrew details: the crumbs on the plate are gone, and the plate came out larger with a heavier shadow. Krea 3 painted a smooth, bright muffin with perfectly round berries and moved the whole layout slightly up the frame, which is why its notebook number is high even though nothing in it looks wrong. This is one run on one photo, and Krea 3 and FLUX 3 Klein had no area to stay inside: FLUX 3 Klein’s boxes are not in RenderHour yet.
FLUX 3 Klein with 2 references
Multi-reference is FLUX 3 Klein’s strength, so we gave it the juice bottle and the muffin plate as 2 references and asked for both on a café table.

It kept the bottle’s shape and droplets, the blue plate and the muffin with its crumbs, and brought the green leaves along. The muffin gained a paper case that the reference did not have. For 0.65 credits, that is a usable product scene.
FLUX 3 Klein and Krea 3 in 6 numbers
- 8 GB: the graphics memory FLUX 3 Klein’s INT8 build needs, so a gaming PC can run it.
- 1,846: FLUX 3 Klein images at 1K that one month of Plus credits buys on RenderHour (1,200 ÷ 0.65), by our arithmetic.
- $5 million: the yearly revenue under which FLUX 3 Klein’s weights are free for commercial use.
- 30 million: the users Krea says it has on krea.ai.
- 4 to 5 seconds: Krea’s fastest setup for one edit at 2K.
- $6,000 vs $22,000: 100,000 edits a month on Krea 3 against GPT Image 2, at Krea’s list prices.
What this means if you make content for social and ads
- Draft in FLUX 3 Klein. At 0.65 credits, test 10 layouts for a post for 6.5 credits, then remake the winner on a stronger model.
- Put products together with FLUX 3 Klein. Up to 10 references: the product, the packaging, the props and the background in one picture.
- Change one photo with Krea 3. Give it the shot and the change you want: a new background, light or season, at 2K for the final.
- Need the rest of the frame to stay put? Check it. In our test Nano Banana 2.1 moved the least for one edit; read our drift test before a long chain of edits.
- For finished ads, the Ads Studio turns a product page into ready creatives.
Every image and video model for one yearly price
Plus billed yearly is $564 for 1,200 credits a month, about 3.9 cents a credit: FLUX 3 Klein, Krea 3, Nano Banana, GPT Image, Kling, Seedance and Veo from one balance. Yearly billing costs less than paying month by month.
